How to Resync Mechanical Clock Chimes

If your mechanical Hermle clock chimes are out of sync with the time your clock hands are indicating, your first thought may be: "My clock must be broken". But don't worry, it may just need a simple adjustment. In this video we will walk you through the process of adjusting the hands to get your clock chiming at the correct times.

Adjusting The Minutes

If your clock is off by a count of minutes, removing and adjusting the minute hand will be your focus. Please note: the minute hand on your clock is the longest hand. 

1. First unscrew the nut holding the hands in place.
2. Then remove the minute hand from the center shaft.
3. Use a pair of pliers to grab the bushing on the back of the minute hand.
4. Make sure to start with small adjustments - this will be a trial and error process. If the hand was pointing before the quarter hour twist the bushing clockwise. If the hand was pointing after the quarter hour, twist the bushing counter clockwise.
5. Reposition the minute hand onto the center shaft of the clock dial and screw the nut back in place. Align the minute hand to the proper quarter hour based on the chime sequence you last heard.
6. Manually advance the minute hand clockwise to each quarter hour - allowing it to chime at each quarter. Listen carefully to make sure your clock is chiming properly according to your specific clock's chime. 
7. Now advance the minute hand clockwise to the correct time. 

Adjusting The Hours

If your clock is off by a count of hours, you will need to align the hour hand. For example, if your hour hand is pointing at 9 but chimes 5 times, you will need to rotate the hour hand to the 5. 

It is important to note that when you make changes to the hands and reset the clock, it can take up to an hour for the chimes to re-sync to the proper quarter hour marks. Allow the clock to run for at least an hour before making further adjustments.

You can also manually advance the minute hand to each quarter hour, allowing the clock to chime at each quarter. If the clock is very badly out of sync, you may not hear the chimes for three of the quarters. In some cases, you might need to advance the hands twice around the clock to align with the proper quarter hour.
